Student-Led Initiative: Talent at Tutor Time on Thursday (24-25)
This term, I initiated a student-led programme during tutor time on Thursdays at Cabra Community College. Aimed at fostering appreciation and presentation skills, this series of events allows students to showcase their talents, from yo-yoing and singing to guitar performances and Rubik's Cube demonstrations.
As the Caomhnóir for one of our two first-year cohorts, it’s a joy to guide these young people as they adjust to post-primary school life. So far, it's been a successful term filled with creativity and camaraderie, embodying the values of our community.
Last year, as a senior tutor to 5th and 6th-year Leaving Certificate Applied students, I encountered a completely different dynamic in teaching and mentorship. The unique structure of LCA, with its focus on practical skills and continuous assessment, brought both challenges and valuable insights that have deeply influenced my approach to tutoring. It’s been eye-opening to see firsthand how tailored guidance can impact student growth, and I’m now bringing this experience into my role as a tutor leader, aiming to support and inspire in ways that genuinely meet each student's needs.
Now, having stepped into a tutor leader role with junior students, I’m meeting these young learners at the beginning of their senior cycle. It’s a new perspective, and I see this role as one where I can help plant those initial seeds of confidence and curiosity. Through tailored guidance, one-on-one sessions, group discussions, and reflective exercises, I aim to support my students holistically, ensuring they’re equipped for the path ahead.
In my role as a tutor at Cabra Community College, I am dedicated to fostering a truly inclusive and supportive environment for all students. Each morning, I connect with my group for ten essential minutes, establishing a space where students feel valued and respected. This time is crucial for demonstrating my commitment to guiding them academically, socially, emotionally, and personally. My aim is to ensure they are supported as they navigate these vital years in their lives.
As a DEIS school, Cabra Community College upholds a commitment to equality in education, ensuring every student can succeed regardless of their background, culture, or religion. We prioritise not only academic excellence but also the well-being of each student. Initiatives like the School Meals Programme play a vital role in this effort by providing nutritious meals to support students’ educational engagement and attendance.
During tutorial time, special needs assistants help distribute a variety of healthy snacks, including popcorn, pretzels, banana bread, and chocolate rice cakes, with chocolate muffins available on Wednesdays. These snacks create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages connection and nourishment. At lunchtime, we partner with Fresh Today to provide hot meals, ensuring that students have access to nutritious food throughout the school day.
In the tutor setting, I emphasise discipline, daily habits, and key routines, including journal usage, adherence to the school’s behavioural expectations, and respect for the values of the Dublin Education and Training Board (ETB). Together, we work to uphold a safe and inclusive environment that champions each student’s development, protecting them from discrimination and fostering a sense of security. I believe that with consistent guidance, every student can thrive, confident in their own abilities and supported by dedicated teachers and staff.
